Benefits of Bilingualism
Bilngualism
  • Students are more prepared for the academic rigor of higher education, which increases the likelihood of academic success in college.
  • Dual language students, including those with disabilities, have higher achievement on state tests than monolingual peers
  • The brainpower required to learn a second language increases flexibility and achievement in all subject areas. The longer the student spends in two languages, the more significant the cognitive advantages
  • There is reduced likelihood for cognitive decline later on in life, as bilingualism has been linked to slower brain aging
  • Bilingual students outperform on tasks that require executive control, such as self-discipline, perseverance, organization, and other skills that support students in achieving goals
  • Bilingual students exhibit  more creativity and problem-solving skills, as well as have stronger working memories and attention spans
  • Students in dual language programs develop multicultural awareness and the ability to communicate in a variety of cultures and settings, which deepens connections and understanding
  • Students are able to maintain strong ties to family and friends, near and far, by being able to communicate with those who speak the family’s native tongue.
  • Bilingual children can help preserve the traditions and identity of their family’s culture or country of origin.
  • Dual language students are qualified to fill positions in the growing local and global multilingual and multicultural workforce.
  • Being bilingual means you stand out in a pool of job applicants, as employers across all sectors of the economy prefer employees who know more than one language
  • According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, bilingual workers will continue to be in high demand. Employment of interpreters and translators will grow faster than the average of all occupations at 20% over the next decade.
  • Once a child learns a second language, it becomes easier to learn subsequent languages
